hypermiling results and other odds and ends

March 26th, 2008 at 07:42 pm

Okay, so my curiosity got the best of me and I hypermiled with my last tank of gas. My milage per gallon went from 15 to almost 20. Not bad for just letting up on the gas a little. The first day I tried this my 13 y.o. said "why are we going so SLOW???" I just laughed and explained what I was doing. (He already knows I'm crazy.) Several days pass, and he's calculating how much money I've saved! We figure about $12.50 a tank.

I went grocery shopping today . My total was $32.78. After coupons, $18.86. Also saved $35.00 at CVS with coupons and ECB.

New challenge total $1264.00

Crazy like a fox! I love it.

I tried hypermiling w/my Dad in his truck yesterday, and he kept encouraging me to speed up until I finally told him what I was doing. Then he got on board. It probably added about 30 minutes (15 going/15 coming) to our trip, but was no biggy as neither of us had anything else of great import to get done later.

I didn't know there was a term for driving slower than the speed limit.... I've been doing this for a while. There is a 50 mph zone just out of Eureka, I live approximately 10 miles away. I just sit the cruise control and go 50 all the way home. Of course people get irritated behind me who expect me to speed up...

I like this concept, but I live in Massachusets and would get myself killed. I have noticed that I already do some of the things hypermilers do, but for other reasons. I have a habit of not using my brakes as often as other people do. I drive a 5 speed so letting off the gas slows the car right down. I went through a period a couple years ago where my hydraulic braking system failed intermittently. Never quite got over that, so I prefer to use my brakes as little as possible.

I haven't ever tracked my mileage on my 18 y/o car. I should probably do that and then see about this hypermiling thing. Great idea.

Homebody, it's actually a little more than just driving under the speed limit. I googled it when I first read about it on here (sorry, don't remember OP) to learn more about it.

What's kind of amusing was that I was getting impatient waiting for my gas to run out so I could see the results! Sad - I know. Smile

You go girl! I've been trying it too, but it's been hard because Chicago has a lot of stop and go traffic. I get angry when I have to break over something stupid when I feel like I've got a good flow sans gas pedal going on Smile

aaah, I see, yes I tend towards some of those things. It drives me crazy when DH roars up to a stop sign, slamming (in my opinion) the brakes on!

homebody: at least it's a stop sign! My racecar driver wannabee husband does this to other CARS! He did get a warning from me yesterday that MA state police are cracking down on "aggressive" drivers over the next few weeks. I say he qualifies, he disagrees. He acts like every other driver on the road was put there to inconvenience him.

He put my car in a snowbank once because he drives too close - had to avoid hitting someone. It's really much easier to stay back a bit and let off the gas!

okay, on second thought, I'll count my blessings Dmontngrey!
