Opinions?

April 22nd, 2008 at 05:27 pm

My youngest is in first grade, in GT classes, and is doing very well. My problem is the second grade teacher is just awful! My oldest had her six years ago and her and I didn't see eye to eye to say the least. It's just not me because I have discussed her attitude with many people and they agree. She does not treat the children like they should be treated.

I don't want his school expierence to be bad. At this age it should still be fun.
His current teacher is strict but not mean, and he really likes her.

Everyone has told me to do what I have to do to get him out of there next year. (even school staff)

If I get him out, I think he will be bored with school. "Been there, done that" sort of thing. I could always suppliment his learning at home.

Well, what do yall think?

Is there more than one 2nd grade class? Can you request that your child be placed in the other class? My mom always made these kind of requests, and was accomodated by the school. Of course this was 30 years ago...

Follow your instincts. If you feel that this may not be a good fit for your son, insist that you get another teacher for him next year.

Zetta, there is more than one second grade class, but only one advanced class per grade. I don't think the other classes will challenge him enough, and he will be bored out of his mind.

debbie, I really don't think this teacher would be good for him. That's why I'm so emotionally torn. Good teacher or academic challenge? Don't know yet. Leaning toward the teacher.

I agree. Request a different teacher. Also, make your concerns known to the principal and superintendant. Lots of times, parents complain amongst themselves but never let the superiors know so nothing changes.

That is a real tough one. My son had an awful experience in first grade with the teacher that was assigned for that type of class. She was just not the kind of person who should have been teaching first grade. He was borderline for that type of class in the other grades so I pulled him out of the program. He didn't have any behavior problems with being bored, but I know he was probably bored with the classes he was in. The teachers might be able to give extra work to keep your child interested if you asked. I know that in third grade, he was basically working on his own stuff at his own pace because that was the type of teacher he had. If I had known about the first grade teacher ahead of time, I would have pulled him out at the beginning. It was a horrible experience for him and me, especially since it was his first full class at school. But, you have to make the judgement call for your child. I don't envy your decision. Good luck!

Go talk to the other regular second grade teacher and get a feel for what she does with kids who are advanced that are still in her class.

I was one of those kids back in the day and there were no special advanced classes back then. My teachers were all excellent at letting me work ahead thru the prescribed curriculum and then helping me move beyond it.

He/She may surprise you at what he/she is willing to do to help the kiddo.

If she won't bend (doubtful), then I'd still keep him out of the advanced class and keep him challenged with extra stuff at home.
